WELL, I'M A WASTE LIKE YOU YOU WITH NOTHING ELSE TO DO ,may i waste your time too? --------------------------------------------------------------------- America, Erin had decided, was quite different to Scotland. Quite different. For one, it was a lot bigger than her small home country. And, much to her delight, the weather was clearly superior. There was a lot more places to shop, or that was what she thought at first - but no, it was pretty much the same brands marketed over and over again under the various different names. Or that's what it seemed to her.
The seventeen year old had never been to America on holiday, unlike some other girls in Leith. They couldn't afford it, for one thing - and how would they get Ilia on the plane? Obviously, there would have been ways around it, but everyday life was hard enough with her little sister, nevermind uprooting the family and going on a long-haul flight across the world with a severely disabled girl who couldn't cope without constant supervision. Hell, it was probably Ilia's death that allowed them to move to America in the first place.
She really needed to stop thinking about Ilia.
"I-I-Ian?" "Over hur,"
Looking over to where she heard the voice of her brother, Erin immediately went to his side, and followed him into the music shop. She had a feeling eyes were on her back, despite the fact they weren't - she was, though, convinced that there would be a lot of staring. Erin had never minded her stutter - after she woke up with it, she'd learned to live with it. No, it was her accent. Her Scottish accent that she thought made her sound stupid. She was dreading the time when she had to start school, the next day - so she was going to enjoy her freedom while she could.
"I-Ian? Aye! W-w-wh-whir ye g-gaun?" She asked, as her brother suddenly veered off in a different direction from her. Erin wasn't a clingy girl, but she still wasn't used to her new home, and natural instinct told her to stick with her elder brother
"Ahm gaun tae look a' th' CD's, whas it look like?" He asked, turning to face her with an eyebrow raised. Erin hated it when he did that - made her feel like a kid again, and God knew those days were hardly easy.
"A-a-wrigh', awr-r-righ'," She muttered, scowling up at Ian. "Ah w-wis j-juh-hust a-a-askin', awrigh'? Ah d-dinnae like th-th-this place, s-s-s't-too cr-crowded. Ahm g-gauna b-be o'er--"
"By all yer rock shite, ah ken, ah ken. You ken whar I'm gauna be?"
"Ah ken," Came the sulky reply. Erin was mostly annoyed at herself though - she was clinging to Ian like he was a fucking safety blanket, for God's sake. Watching as her brother sloped off towards the DVD's for a minute, Erin turned to walk towards the section she normally hid in - or rather, find it - when she went headfirst into someone's shoulder.
Knocked back a little, and feeling unsteady, she put her hand out and a handful of CD's off a rack came tumbling down, making a loud noise as people turned to stare. Erin felt heat flood her face, and knew she'd gone as red as her hair.
"F-f-fer fahk's s-sake! Ahm s-s-s-so s-s-orry," She said immediately after cursing, trying to pick up the CD's and look up at who she had smacked into while hiding her burning face, all at once.
Welcome to America, Erin - good luck surviving.

Caitie never was one for shopping. There was no logical reason behind it, she didn't have some sort of grudge against cashiers or a deep-rooted fear of mass-produced clothing, she just... didn't like it. The seventeen year old had never needed any more reason than that. The dislike wasn't even specific to what she was shopping for; food, clothes, gifts, it just didn't matter to Caitie, none of them held any lure. So, when she was dragged out with her friends it was never much of a surprise to them if she wandered off. Generally speaking, they'd be able to hunt her down in a nearby park or the one type of store that was an exception to her rule- music stores.
From hardcore punk to rapcore and nu-rave, rock and "emo" to chart pop, it just didn't matter. Caitie would listen to it all, and she absolutely adored most of it. After all, what was a party without a killer playlist? Her younger brother had dragged her to one of Rutherford's malls today for some reason or another. Something about needing something for school tomorrow, though she hadn't really been listening when he'd told her about it. Connor might have been her best friend, but that didn't mean that Caitie had to take an interest in his weird obsession with doing well in class now, did it? So, predictably, she'd slipped away somewhere between the bus stop and the stationary store and made her way straight here. Connor would come and find her when he was done.
"Why the hell don't I have this yet?" Caitie muttered to herself, as she turned over Cobra Starship's most recent Album in her manicured hands. They were one of her favourite bands at the moment, but thanks to her current lack of a job she hadn't had the cash to buy it yet. Grumbling about how unfair the situation was, the seventeen year old began digging around in her purse, just in case she'd magically acquired enough money out of thin air.
Someone behind her crashed forwards, hitting the back of her shoulder with their face and springing immediately backwards into a rack of CDs, knocking them skywards as Cait turned to see thee source of the noise. A strange look, somewhere between a smirk and a frown, crossed Caitlyn's face as she watched a red-headed girl with a strange accent that she couldn't quite place stammer a frantic apology and try to tidy up the mess. The heat in the nervous girl's face grew, and Caitie felt a small pang of guilt for her amusement. The poor kid seemed terrified.
"Hey, calm down." she soothed, placing her handbag on the floor and kneeling down to help. "Don't worry about it. Are you okay?" Caitie asked her, with a sympathetic smile.

WELL, I'M A WASTE LIKE YOU YOU WITH NOTHING ELSE TO DO ,may i waste your time too? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh good; here it came. The pity smiles, the "are you alright?", the actual laughing inside their head. Erin knew that was what it was, she'd done it once or twice back in Leith and York. Nodding madly, and then stopping when she realised she looked like an idiot, she kept her eyes fixed firmly on the floor, not wanting to see the actual laughter in the person's eyes. Scrabbling for the many CD cases, she heard footsteps, then someone else was down on the floor - glancing up, she noticed Ian giving her an exasperated look.
"Ye cannae do anythin' by yersel', can ye?" Only the fact his tone was joking saved Erin from snapping at him - she felt embarrassed enough as it was. Looking over at the other girl down on her knees, helping them gather CD's, she felt some of the heat fade from her cheeks, although she still had problems making eye contact.
"S-s-s'rry," She mumbled, picking up the CD's she'd stacked and starting to put them back on the rack, before clearing her throat and speaking a little louder. "S'rry f-f-fer s-s-slammin' int-t-to y-yu-yer s-sh-should-d-der," She said, feeling her awkwardness increase a tenfold as she stuttered through every word. She was going to have to go through this again tomorrow, wasn't she?
"Erin, can ye manage?" Ian asked, and Erin knew exactly what he meant - could he go back to doing what he liked now?
"A-aye, gaun, n-nice t-tuh-ta s-s-s-see ye c-care," She stammered irritably at him, kneeling and grabbing a few more CD's as he walked off, before turning back to the girl she'd slammed into. The fire on her face had mostly died down, except for some pink splotches in her cheeks, but she was no longer colour-co-ordinated with her hair, which was the main thing. Feeling somewhat awkward again, she shifted from foot to foot, scuffing her Converse off the floor as she struggled to get her words out, and get them understood.
"I-is y-y-yer s-s-sh-sho-shoulder a-awr-righ'? Ah d-d-din't d-d-damage it, o-or not-thin', r-ri-righ'?" She asked, clearly worried that she'd hurt this girl she barely knew - the last thing she needed to do was make enemies out of people she hardly knew.

Frowning, Caitie watched as read headed nervous girl nodded frantically, looking as if her head had come loose, and wondered vaguely if the kid had some sort of mental issues going on. She just seemed so... panic-stricken. It would make the whole flying through the air, crashing into someone and knocking several dozen cds sky-high thing seem a whole lot more understandable, not to mention the almost incoherent muttering sounds she'd make seconds earlier. "Just.. rexlax." Caitie sighed, trying again to console the frantic girl.
A boy, who Cait could only assume was nervous-girl's brother, came over and said something in the same, almost alien, voice (though without the stuttering), and Caitie decided they were probably just from someplace far away. Somewhere in Europe, maybe. Which probably meant she wasn't mentally ill, just nervous. Oh shit. Now she felt horrible for assuming the other girl had something wrong with her. Thank God no one could hear what she'd been thinking. "Don't worry about it." Caitie smiled gently, straightening up to re-stack a handful of CDs.
Honestly, this girl's constant stammering was already starting to become irritating. Not to mention how much harder it made it for Caitlyn to understand the thick accent. "Your brother?" she asked, nodding toward the now retreating back, "Mine's around here too, somewhere.."
"No, I'm fine." Caitie grimaced, cut off by the questions about her shoulder. "Like I said, don't worry about it." she was trying to be patient, but honestly, Caitie wasn't used to people being so worried about her. Not since.. well, she wasn't just about to start thinking about him now. Not when she'd spent so long trying to forget.
"How about you? You didn't hurt yourself when you fell did you? " The girl's face was still a slightly worrying shade of pink, and Caitie couldn't quite tell if it was just out of embarassment or pain brought on by crashing through a rack of CDs. "My name's Caitie by the way." She grinned, a slight afterthought. For some reason, she always forgot about the actual introductions bit when she met someone new. There were always so many other things to say, so much stuff that seemed more important.

WELL, I'M A WASTE LIKE YOU YOU WITH NOTHING ELSE TO DO ,may i waste your time too? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Erin was somewhat suprised with the girl trying to make conversation about her. She was telling her to relax, but Erin couldn't calm herself. The CD's were back on the shelf, and people had stopped staring, but she was fidgeting with with bracelet around her wrist, watching the girl she'd slammed into. She was saying something about her own brother being around, which made her relax slightly more - common ground here, and apparently, she felt like making conversation. That was good - maybe she'd make a friend.
And then quite possibly never see her again, but what did that matter to Erin? "Ah d-didnae h-h-hurt mahs-s-sel'," She told her, stuttering somewhat less now that she felt a little more at ease. "I-it w-wis you ah wis w-w-worried abou'. Mah n-n-name's E-Erin. Ahm f-fr-from S-S-Sco'land," There was a moment where she almost put her hand out for Caitie to shake, and her arm certainly twitched upwards, but she caught herself at the last second and scratched an imaginary itch on her neck, eyes once more cast to the floor.
"S'a l-lot bigger t-than S-Sco'land h-here. T-too many shops s-s-selling th-the s-same t-thing. Ah d-dinnae g-get it. S'mad here. W-were y'b-born hur, Caitie?" She asked, finally meeting the girl's eyes for the first time and giving her a nervous smile as her face finally went back to it's normal colour. She was tempted to ask her if she went to the school she'd be starting the next day, but she didn't want to seem too desperate to make friends, like she used to - if the conversation was going to roll that way, she wouldn't push it. Anyway, she'd find out the next day, wouldn't she? Still pulling at the bracelet, which was sliding up her arm, she waited for Caitie's answer, and tried not to get too distracted by all the different people in the shop. There was a lot more variety than Scotland, that was for sure. It was going to take some time to get used to.

Sighing heavily as she watched nervous-girl fidgeting, Caitie wondered if she should maybe put her arm around the kid. It was probably a little overly familiar, but she just had to do something to keep her from squirming like that; it was painful to watch. She seemed to be calming down slightly now, though, and Caitie smiled gently as Erin introduced herself, explaining the accent by telling her she was from Scotland. The corners of Cait's mouth twitched in an almost-smirk at the mental image Erin's homeland conjured up; Bagpipes, Kilts, the Loch Ness Monster... but Caitlyn tried to keep a lid on it. She doubted Erin here would appreciate the stereotypes all that much.
“I'm sure it is.” she grinned, nodding. Scotland was some little place near England, nothing like America. Or even Illinois, for that matter. The comment about shops was a welcome change from most girls Caitie knew, too. She thought she was the only one round here who couldn't stick malls, apparently not. “I know what you mean, it's so pointless. And nah, I'm from Jersey, originally.” The conversation was flowing slightly better now, and it didn't feel like as much of a challenge to get Erin to talk, even if the accent and slight stutter still made things a little trickier to understand.
“You been living here long, Erin?” Caitie asked, already fairly sure that she knew the answer. From the way Erin was comparing Rutherford to her old home, it made it pretty clear she wasn't used to the place, not to mention the nervousness. But then, it was always possible she'd been here a while and just hadn't settled yet; Caitie knew as well as anyone else that this place could be daunting at first, especially when you were different to everyone else.
