personality Erin is a girl who lives with three things; her head in the clouds, music in her ears, and a paintbrush in her hands. Around new people, Erin can be shy, giving only smiles, the odd word or two, and over time, she may gradually warm to you, and her bubbly personality will shine through in random outbursts, but Erin is a guarded person mostly, who no longer trusts the first person she meets. Eccentric is a good word to describe her if you get into her confidence, and even though that can scare some people off, Erin never seems hostile; while not constantly optimistic, she just seems to send out waves that tell people she's friendly, and that she'd enjoy their company, and it makes her a very likable person.
The only reason Erin doesn't speak much when she first meets people is because she stutters; it's not as bad as it used to be, but it can still get incredibly bad, and talking slowly makes it easier to speak, because it reduces the chance of stuttering. Even so, there'll be times when she'll attempt the word until she's almost crying with the effort, and she still can't get it out, but she's never let any of this affect her personality. Because of the fact she speaks slowly, she often sounds as if she isn't really all there, and sometimes this is true - Erin is quite prone to daydreams, and can slip into them without warning. Most of these are brought on by music.
Erin cannot play an instrument, and she's far from the best singer, but all the same, music is the greatest love of her life, tied with her friends and photography. She doesn't have much of a temper, but when she does get angry, she gets upset about it, and in a situation she doesn't understand, it's quite easy for her to lose her head, and music often helps that - it calms her down easily, and she always carries her iPod with her; it's always on, and playing loudly, and this also gives people the idea she's not listening to them, which is often half true.
Erin's always shown to be talented with art, and loved to scribble random patterns on pages ever since she was old enough to hold a pencil. Over the years, her talent has developed, and Erin loves to draw and paint, though it's always far easier with a pencil. Black and white is usually what she does, because it's pretty much how she sees the world - black and white with few grey areas, and one of those grey areas is where she is right now. A lot of her art expresses how she feels, and so she tends to draw more things with grey in it nowadays as she struggles to find herself and adapt to a new life.

history For Eliza Nesser, it started sometime around midnight. September 14th, exactly midnight, and she was woken from her sleep by her first contraction taking hold. She wasted no time in waking her husband, Steven, who in turn wasted no time calling an ambulance, getting his wife into different clothes, grabbing the bag they'd prepared, and leaving their first child, two year old Ian, with his grandparents, before following Eliza's ambulance to the hospital. At 4.13 a.m, Erin Abigail Nesser came into the world, and she came in shrieking.
Erin was the second child of the couple, and a three years later, she would be followed by a sister. Born in Leith, Scotland, Erin lived there for most of her life. At the start, her and her brother were close, but eventually, their bond deteriorated, and they couldn't be in the same room as one another without fighting somehow. Up until just before her fourth birthday, though, everything was good for the little girl. She was bright, and friendly with everyone who she came across. The area she grew up in may not have been the best place to raise two children, but their family was close. Ian and Erin never wanted for anything in their lives, and when her mother found out she was pregnant again, the whole family was excited.
Ilia Rose Nesser was born two and a half months premature, and severely disabled. The older Ilia got, the more obvious her disability was, and it became obvious she was mentally retarded as well. Her mind was stuck in infancy, and she could do nothing by herself. Most of her days were spent in a wheelchair, and she had to constantly be attended by someone, meaning her parents relationship was starting to get strained; taking care of Ilia took up every second of their lives, meaning Ian and Erin were left to their own devices.
Neither knew what was wrong with their sister, but in a way, they blamed themselves - if they had have been better, their sister would be okay. Without their parents around to control them, they began to snipe at each other at first, and over time, it became worse and worse; when Ian was nine and Erin seven, they were fighting each other daily. Things came to a head when Ian deliberately threw his sister down the stairs. Erin smacked her head and passed out - she woke up in hospital. No physical damage had been done to her, but it was noticed that she started to speak with a slight stutter, which got worse over time.
At school, Erin was bright enough, and she passed her 11+ with a B1. Secondary school in Scotland, however, was harder for her. Her and her brother were still distant, and the laughing stock of the school because of Ilia. People had seen them out with their mum and their sister, and although all Erin ever faced were whispers, and a variety of taunts over her stutter, which was getting worse and worse, Ian got the worst of the abuse. Erin can still remember watching him in the schoolyard; she had been hiding because of some bullies, who had then cornered her brother, and proceeded to chant at him; "YER SISTER'S A SPASTIC! YER SISTER'S A SPASTIC!"
Erin had no idea how long this had gone on for for Ian, but even then, she couldn't help but wonder if they meant Ilia or her. Knowing how bad Ian was getting it managed to patch up the bond between them when she told him she knew how they felt, and they managed to stick together for a few more years; when Erin was thirteen and Ian fifteen, things came to a head when they were cornered by a more vicious gang of bullies, who would have beaten them up if it weren't for adult interference. Disgusted with the way their children were being treated, Eliza and Steven used all the money they had managed to save to move the family to York in England, to a quiet area where they hoped things would be better for their family.
The most nerve-wracking experience Erin had ever gone through was starting her new secondary school, where everyone knew everyone, had a different accent, their own slang and their own group of friends, and being seen in public with her sister. Thankfully, no-one said anything offending to her. People in York were genuinely nice, and even understood somewhat about her sister. They didn't mind her stutter or her accent, and for the first time in years, Erin found herself relaxing enough to make some friends. It wasn't a large group of friends, only three other people, but Erin felt comfortable with them, and for once, she was happy.
And then Ilia died.
As time progressed, Ilia had just gotten worse and worse, until it got to the point their parents couldn't take care of her - she spent months in a hospital where she eventually died in her sleep. At the funeral, everyone told them how it would be easier for them all, and it was better Ilia didn't have to suffer anymore, but despite the fact she'd never really been bothered with her before, Erin was overwhelmed with grief at losing her little sister. She felt guilty for never taking a interest in her, or trying to make her feel normal, and she retreated into herself a tiny bit, only being saved by her friends - they took her out of herself, and slowly, she was able to somewhat get over the death of her sister. The bond between her and her brother strengthened even more, and Erin found she was using her art and music as a barrier against her emotions, and used her art to help her get over her sister's death, although on some of her worst days, she often feels like she should have taken more of interest in her sister.
In connection with Steven's work, he was transferred to a branch of the company in Rutherford, and the family were actually happy to get out of the U.K. Ian and Erin were, understandably, incredibly nervous about going to America, with all the differences they had. They had no idea what school year the American grades matched up to, what curriculum they would study, and even if they would make friends. Erin in particular was very self-conscious, because she knew that a lot of people in America tended to be thin and pretty, and she was leaning on the heavier side of the scale. Converting to vegetarianism and going on diets allowed her to shift the weight, to her relief, and she felt a little less nervous about moving to Rutherford - a little.
The family has only been in Rutherford about two weeks, and Erin has not yet managed to make any friends, because she has yet to start the school, and find her way around the town, but she's optimistic about it, somewhat, and hopes that people will be accepting of her. Just until she finds out who she is, now that the move has changed her ideas of herself.
